Update on Danebury Avenue and Highcliffe Drive barriers

Hopefully many of you are aware of the great news that Danebury Avenue and Highcliffe Drive will not be included within the Wandsworth Council’s Roehampton Regeneration masterplan for the Alton Estate. The MP Justine Greening stated this recently on the putneysw15 website. To read the article please click on the below link.

We were part of the ‘Roehampton residents’ that the MP met with, and this also shows that residents can make a difference where both our Labour Councillors and various Roehampton Advisory groups (such as the Partnership and the Forum) have failed to drive home the concerns of the residents.

Please note that the article mentions that TfL will still be engaged regarding Highcliffe Drive, so one would think that this still has scope to be opened. Otherwise, the discussions with TfL would not be continuing.

However, let’s not get carried away with the hand the Conservatives have played as they keen to the open the barriers previously, back in 2008. MP Greening was keen on this back then and the following article shows this.

Labour, back then, through the General election candidate Stuart King challenged this and provided his reasons on his blog.

What have our current Labour Councillors done about these barriers? They campaigned on keeping the Danebury Avenue barrier closed, as the following articles highlight;

Since being elected they have been very quiet on the regeneration and the barriers.

In conclusion, it’s terrific that such strides have been made on the barriers, though is it the case that the Conservatives have one eye on the 2015 General Elections which is why the barriers have been removed from the masterplan? What about Labour, is it the case that now they have a monopoly on the Councillor seats for Roehampton they have lost interest?
