Queries regarding the University’s benefit to ‘local community’

In the Wandsworth Guardian an article regarding the University’s expansion has been drawing attention and to date has produced three letters in response, two from Roehampton residents and one from the University. These are briefly outlined below.

Article Number Title and reference Brief overview
1 ‘University expansion wins approval’ – Wandsworth Guardian, 18th September 2014, page 5 This article refers to Roehampton University winning planning expansion for a new library and student accommodation, to which Councillor Ambache stated “The university is of considerable benefit to the local community……..”.The reference to “local community” then sparked a series of three letters that were published in the Wandsworth Guardian.
2 ‘University’s benefit to residents minimal’ – Wandsworth Guardian, 25th September 2014, page 8 In response, a Roehampton resident then challenged what this benefit to the “local community” is.
3 ‘Uni is a ‘a good neighbour’ that ‘listens to community’ – Wandsworth Guardian, 2nd October 2014, page 10 Roehampton University provided a response, which focused more on the Wandsworth Borough as opposed to the Alton estate (where the University is seeking to have student housing for 400 built in the Town Centre).
4 ‘How can new uni housing be built with little support?’ – Wandsworth Guardian, 9th October 2014, page 8 A view expressed by an Alton Estate resident which draws out the fact that “local”, i.e. the Alton Estate, feedback to student housing in the Town Centre is not popular and that the Roehampton bodies representing the area are ignoring these views along with the Putney Heath & Roehampton ward Councillors.

We encourage Roehampton residents to write to the Wandsworth Guardian with any thoughts you may have regarding the Alton regeneration.

The Wandsworth Guardian on 30th October 2014 published a fourth letter with regards to the article title ‘University expansion wins approval’ in the 18th September 2014 edition. This latest letter is written by Councillor Jeremy Ambache. Please note that this seeks to explain his comments regarding the library, though it does not address the issues that either Mr Gray or I mentioned within our published letters.
