Finally……an update (of sorts) regarding funding for water sprinklers..(21 March 2018)

This is a follow up to the article ‘What did Councillor Govindia write to Chancellor Hammond regarding water sprinklers? (24 December 2017)’.

It has some fascinating background which might be of interest to those that are concerned by the prospect of having water sprinklers retro-fitted in the 99 tall buildings proposed by Wandsworth Borough Council.

The answers are at the whatdotheyknow website under the heading of “Council leader urges Chancellor to provide financial support to leaseholders over fire safety measures”. There are various correspondences contained which might provide some food for thought.

Residents to be invited to view flat with sprinkler system (16 March 2018)

Well, here comes the show flat……..

The following is an extract from the Council article recently published.

“Tower block residents will be invited during the coming months to look around an example of what a flat with fire suppression sprinklers installed looks like.

Based on advice from the London Fire Brigade and a range of industry experts, the council announced last year with cross-party support a programme to retro-fit sprinklers in 99 high rise blocks in the borough that are ten storeys or above to bring them up to current standards and improve fire safety in around 6,400 homes.

The council has since pro-actively referred the matter to a First Tier Property Tribunal, which will investigate the viability and rechargeability of the proposal looking at the council’s lease agreement and listening to any concerns leaseholders have.

Since 2007 national building regulations have required all new-build high rise blocks of 10 storeys or more to install sprinkler fire suppression systems.

The council will continue to seek additional funding from central government to assist with these and other fire safety works, and leaseholders would be given an extended interest-free period of 48 months to cover the estimated £4,000 cost of installation if the works proceed”.

Did you see the new(ish) car parks in Hersham Close?

For those of you on the Alton East, hopefully you’ve seen the much improved area by the electricity sub-station located by Hersham Close 73-95 & 41-71. It has taken a lot of time and effort by the Hersham Close Residents Association (HCRA) working with both of the Council’s Estate Manager and the Resident Participation Officer to make the unloved area around the sub-station look presentable and contribute to the local community through two new car parking spaces. All of this was achieved through the Small Improvement Budget (SIB).

How it was…..

The following pictures highlight an area which was unloved and allowed to grow wild. It was also used by some people as an area for fly tipping.

Then the car parks….

Early in 2017 two car parks were created.

Then the new grass….

At the start of 2018 new grass was laid down. It’s a wonderful example of what can happen when local residents work with the Council.
