Temple update (with photos)

Background

There have been a few articles about the Temple located in Minstead Gardens which is within Roehampton University’s grounds and that this year, rather sadly, is the 20th year of this local Grade II* listed artefact being on Historic England’s list of Heritage at Risk items.

However, progress has been made to improve the area around the Temple as per the works outlined in planning application 2018/2260.

Much of the background that has been mentioned in roeregeneration blogs can be located within the following link – https://roeregeneration.wordpress.com/?s=Temple%2C+Minstead

Though you may find further information with other word searches.

What happened in April 2019?

The Putney Society with the Roehampton University kindly organized for interested stakeholders to attend a closer inspection of the Temple. From the following photos it can be seen that there is a great improvement both the fencing protecting the Temple as well as the surrounding area. It is also hoped that the photos do some justice for highlighting what a local treasure this building is.

Wandsworth (Conservation Area) Advisory Committee (12 March 2019)

Background

At the upcoming Wandsworth (Conservation Area) Advisory Committee (WACC) on 12th March 2019 there are a few Roehampton & Putney Heath ward entries – https://democracy.wandsworth.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=493&MId=6071

Item 3 – Minutes 8th January 20019

Refer to – https://democracy.wandsworth.gov.uk/documents/s64834/Minutes%20-%208th%20January%202019.pdf

(vi) Mount Clare Campus, Minstead Gardens (2018/4390)

The Principal Conservation and Urban Design Officer provided an update in relation to the cedar tree on the site that was discussed at the last meeting. He noted that he had contacted the University’s Director of Estates in 2015 about the decaying tree and that he could not find any evidence of a response. He explained that the tree was protected by a Tree Preservation Order but that it was now just a tree stump. The Principal Conservation and Urban Design Officer informed the Committee that he would discuss the replacement of the tree with the University. It was confirmed that the Principal Conservation and Urban Design Officer would contact Gilly King and/or the Director of Estates to discuss the tree replacement.

(ii) Alton Estate Regeneration

John Horrocks, Putney Society, noted that the Alton Estate regeneration planning application was scheduled to be submitted at the end of January 2019. He stated that this would be located within the largest conservation area in Wandsworth and hoped that it would be considered by the Committee at the meeting in March 2019. The Principal Conservation and Urban Design Officer noted that there had been four Design and Review Panels in relation to this application and that the details would be published online.

The ward’s Heritage at Risk pieces of history

This article follows on from the article about the Temple in the grounds of Mount Clare, Minstead Gardens. From this it was thought it might be worthwhile explaining a bit more about those buildings which are listed by Historic England as Heritage at Risk.

When did the buildings become Heritage at Risk?

Email (dated 10 January 2018) from Historic England listed the following years as to when they were registered as Heritage at Risk;

Notice how three of these buildings feature in the Roehampton & Putney Heath ward?

Next year the Temple, if still on the list, will be celebrating 20 years on the list?

As the Temple has been covered, it might be worth sharing photos with you of the other buildings.

The Montague Arms

Putney Vale Cemetery Gates
