General Election Hustings at Roehampton Unversity………………did you know about it?

Did you know about the recent Hustings at Roehampton University?

We’ve been hearing from the University that it does its bit for the local community, and many locals are sceptical about this, as has been highlighted not long ago in the Wandsworth Guardian. Well, let us know what you think of this community example from the University.

How did we hear about the Hustings?

Well, a few of us attended the General Election Hustings at St Mary’s Church on the 23rd April which was organised by The Putney Society. It was commented then that there was a Hustings to be held at the University on the 30th April.

Was this highlighted to Roehampton residents?

No it wasn’t. The Roehampton Voice didn’t have it listed in its ‘What’s On’ section in the April 2015 Issue 20. It wasn’t mentioned at the Roehampton Partnership meeting of 23rd March 2015. Remember, the University and the Student Union have seats on this Partnership. Also, the Forum member of the Partnership was not aware of this meeting. This was not mentioned at either the Roehampton Forum meeting of the 6th March 2015 or the 14th April 2015. Added to this, a Labour Councillor whom works at the University attends the Forum and the Partnership, again, this information was not shared. If part of the Roehampton community, surely Roehampton residents should have been invited?

How did we find out more details?

First, we contacted a staff member at the University with the following email;

“Last night at the Putney MP candidate Hustings it was mentioned that there is to be a Roehampton Hustings at the university.Something such as this should have been mentioned at the most recent Roehampton Partnership, however, as it hasn’t is it possible to please understand whether members of the public, especially those of Roehampton, are able to attend?

Thank you in advance for your reply”.

Did we receive a reply? No, though the Green MP candidate kindly shared the details with us.

There were empty seats which could have been filled by local residents.

Questions that were raised though not put to the candidates

One had to write the questions and submit them. The following questions were offered but not to put the MP candidates;

“In the 2008 Labour survey ‘what Roehampton wants’ it states that ‘there is a legitimate debate to be had as to whether the Alton Estate – already the most densely populated part of the constituency – should be the focus of hundreds new homes’. This was when there was 291 homes, now it’s 800 plus student housing. What do each of our MP candidates have to say about this comment?”

“Given the regeneration is in the Alton Estate in Roehampton, do you think local residents have missed an opportunity to have their views heard by not widely advertising this terrific event?”

Roehampton regeneration – documents that may be of interest

If, like us, you’ve struggling through the mire of emails and websites to try and find out whom, and which is group, is saying what about the regeneration, then hopefully this webpage will assist you. From one resident we’ve had the following feedback “The site should become the go-to place for us to know what’s going on. It would save everybody a lot of bother if the council automatically sent you any relevant document (or link to such). That way, anything not voluntarily forwarded, we’d know they are trying to keep quiet about”.

Going forward we’ll try to update this page with information about the Roehampton Regeneration that is available from the various groups. We can’t guarantee that we will capture all information here, though we shall do what we can.

Roehampton Partnership

Feedback we’ve had a Councillor regarding the prominence of the Roehampton Partnership within the regeneration process was that “The Roehampton Partnership is the key consultative body for the Roehampton Regeneration”. When asked about the lack of information available on this key consultative body the response “You are also right in thinking that information on the Roehampton Partnership on the Wandsworth Council website is rather sparse”. Shame it’s taken a resident from the Alton Estate to highlight this………………….
